The original (modern/open) home, built in the late 1980's, is located on the west shore of Orchard Lake at the end of a quiet/serene street with dense forest bordering the north side of the site. The scope of the project included two bedrooms with shared/hall bath, upper floor laundry room and new third floor addition for the master suite.

The design philosophy: create a TREE-HOUSE experience perched high above the water below. From the exterior, the two-story window wall (part of the new addition) provides a glimpse of the vertical volume leading to the third floor. The artistic (structural steel/stained wood treads/open risers/cable railing) stair anchors the main interior load bearing wall separating the girls' bedrooms from the circulation path. A small library/reading area is located next to the circulation/stair away form the main living area providing some privacy space. The master suite, the entire third floor addition, includes bedroom/separate closets/bath/exterior covered balcony. The two exterior window walls (floor to ceiling glass) within the bedroom along with the covered balcony increases the TREE-HOUSE living concept. A large window located above the soaking tub captures the beautiful lake views from the master (spa-like) bath. The linear see-through fireplace and the sliding (glass/wood) shoji panels provide the connection of bedroom to bath. The main bath area (soaking tub/floating wood vanity cabinetry) is separated from the shower/water closet area by the continuous textured (translucent) glass door/wall.
