The original stucco tudor style dwelling, circa 1916, was the first house constructed in the Birmingham Estates Subdivision located just north of Maple Road and east of Adams Road. In the late 1970’s the house suffered through many unattractive changes; all the original windows had been replaced, the original stucco exterior was covered in blue vinyl siding, an insensitive rear addition was built along with a large raised wood deck that engulfed the back yard. The scope of the renovation project included a complete exterior stucco restoration, the removal of the existing rear addition / wood deck that would allow for new entertaining (kitchen / nook / family) space, provide greater access to the back yard and new outside stone patio area.

The design concept is about being seamless (pure / true) through the complete understanding of the original historic house and the thorough knowledge of proportion / scale / material / detail. Every aspect of this project starts from the connection to the house: the new front porch (sense of entry / welcome home), the new single story front bay window (a response to the historic), the location / style of every window / door (importance of wood detailing), the new single story addition (modern living / exterior scale and proportion) and finally the merging of interior to exterior (house to landscape/street).
