The original brick dwelling, built in 1950, is located on a sloping site in the historic Burns Park neighborhood of Ann Arbor. The interior layout was renovated to capture the views/natural daylight (eastern/southern sun exposure) and extend the connection to the landscape/site.

The design concept: a complete transformation of the existing interior space into a unique mid-century modern aesthetic with the layering of interior/exterior space. The process begins with the openness of the kitchen/nook/family into one living space, the introduction of floor to ceiling glass (large windows/sliding doors) and with the cantilevered stained cedar deck overlooking the main yard providing an outside entertaining experience. The horizontal/narrow slot cedar railing at the deck provides the necessary privacy from the street. To further enhance the idea, simple/pure/clean lines provide the control as the materials provide the contrast by using dark wood/stone floors, white cabinets, super white granite, stained wood sliding door panel with exposed stainless steel hardware to close off the pantry area along with the linear/modern fireplace located in the master bedroom. An existing bedroom was relocated to allow for the expansion of the master suite to include a shared office located adjacent to the master bedroom.
